Yet another blog, by yet another person.
Random stuff about Python, Java, Scala, and other random stuff.
I love my fun-fiction shows (I don't like to call them "science fiction" because there is rarely any science and not necessarily great in terms of fiction, but that's an entirely different rant), but I do have point out something really weird about aliens, especially those "advanced" civilizations.
Where are the bloody cameras?
Take one of my favorite shows, Stargate SG-1. The Stargate team is always boarding and attacking Goa'uld mother-ships. These mother ships belong to a highly advanced civilization (well, of parasites) and comes with all fancy electronics and photonic gadgetry. But no fraking cameras in the corridors.
If you have been to any petty deli or grocery store in the US you would find at least two cameras. Military and federal sites are full of cameras with dedicated personnel monitoring them. Supposedly ten thousand years ahead of the current technology and the Goa'uld cannot get a few cameras monitoring their corridors.
From the point of view of the makers of the show and its viewers, it does make more interesting fight scenes and allows the "fearless Tau'ri warriors" to fight their way in and get to the big bad villain and surprise her (or it).
And why do they (the Goa'uld) always leave the ring (a transportation device) unguarded and unmonitored?
I do understand that these are devices used to keep the "story" moving forward, but this has been shown far too many times that it is becoming more and more apparent.
Consider another example, from Stargate Atlantis. People are imprisoned in a biological ship (of the Wraith), who proceed to cut themselves loose. How would something like that not be noticed! A simple relay can be used along with small look-up table can be used to implement a check for unscheduled opening of a door. Why did the Wraith ship fail to raise even a general alarm, when it would have been possible to pin-point the location of the jail-break.
Maybe, they (makers of Stargate) will come up with an explanation for this or at least feature it in their usual spoofs episode. Or, probably not.
At least, when it comes to being closer to reality, these shows do a much better job than Armageddon. :-)
